A Problem With the Way We Design...

Most of today’s infrastructure problems can be traced to the fact that humans often build with nature as a constrain. Our designs are built, in a sense, to fight against nature. What if instead of belligerence we advocated incorporating nature to the fullest extent in our designs?

The environmental team of the Village of Vinton Multipurpose Project designed four systems with the goal of utilizing the available water resources to their maximum extent while also reducing the utilities’ (electricity and water) monthly costs. The four systems are Retention Ponds, Landscape, Grey Water, and Rainwater. The c (in order) system was designed to account for the increase in runoff, the second system was developed to reduce the costs of heating and cooling the buildings as well as to make the center pleasing to its users, and the last two systems are meant to reduce the costs associated with water usage. The costs of some of the systems were covered, completely or in part, through incentives various levels of government provide to implement so called “green” alternatives. All four of the systems seemed to have either met or exceeded the afore mentioned design criteria while keeping the funds required to build the systems fairly low.
